In school I have taken plenty of math classes. My favorite was geometry which comes in useful when playing a game of pool. The other useful math I learned was probably complete by 5th grade because I could add, subtract, multiply and divide; I also could use the calculator. What else would I really need to know? One of the amazing concepts in math that I could never quite understand or figure out why we had to learn was the idea of “infinity”. It is something that cannot be described or quantified but it still can be used in math. What?!
In life there are some things that are just too hard to comprehend and feel like we can get a handle on. Now, knowing that, think about this conversation and think of how you would respond. Jesus said to Martha,
“Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
Trying to understand eternity if like trying to understand infinity. It is not possible other that to get lost in the vast size and expanse of such a huge concept. Live forever? Forever? Like never die? No end at all? How? What’s the point? Doesn’t that get boring? How can there be no end? There is always an end…That’s the way my mind works. What about you?
All I know is that it is comforting to think that this is not it, and that there is life after our earthly death. It is also great to believe that eternal life can be heavenly and full of peace and joy that is sometimes hard to find here on earth. We all have images of Heaven…what it would be like to be eternally happy and at peace. The reality of it is that Jesus came to earth to make sure we could have that opportunity. He raised Lazarus from the dead this week in the gospel but Lazarus body will die again. It was a miracle, but the larger message is the one Jesus shares with you and me. We will live forever if we allow Him to dwell in us and let the Holy Spirit be the guiding force in our lives; if we are faithful to Him and the way He has left for us to live. Then eternal life is ours and maybe forever and infinity will start to mean something more; maybe then we will understand. All I know is that I don’t want to miss out! Think. Pray. Decide. Change.
GOD LOVES YOU…Aim at heaven and forever with HIM!
