In the Word: Gifted

By Jonathan Camiolo

I was watching TV yesterday and I could not find anything I really wanted to watch.  Then I came across the action packed movie X-Men.  X Men is a movie about a group of people that discover they are mutants with special powers and abilities that make them different.  They live like everyone else but are different.  Some of them are invited to go to a school for the “gifted” where they live with other mutants and learn about how to help the world using their special powers.

In the readings this week, we encounter the 3 Magi, the 3 Kings or the 3 Wise Men as they are called in the different gospels.  They are on their way to find the newborn King.  They set out in pursuit to find the place that he is born and bring gifts to lay at his feet.  They plan to offer homage to promised newborn that would shepherd Israel.  They came to adore the baby what was born to make the world a better place and use his “special powers”, his divinity to save all humanity.  Jesus was not a mutant but he did come to open the gates of Heaven for us.  He was born so that we could all have a new life.

The Kings offered him what they had, and we are called to do that too.  We give gifts at Christmas because Jesus came and gave us all the gift of eternal life.  Jesus came and showed us that God would even become a man like us because He loves us that much.  He has brought new dignity to our humanity.  What greater gift could he offer?  What gifts do you have, what gift can you offer to Christ this year?  Each and every one of us has some special power, some talent, some gift that is meant to make this world a better place.  These gifts and abilities come from God and are to be used to help others.  You and I might not be mutants that can fly, create storms or walk through walls, but we are all gifted!  Believe it!  Think (What are my gifts?). Pray (Why did God give me this gift?). Decide (How can I use them?). Change (Build the Kingdom of God on earth).

You are a gifted and can offer a lot to the world!  No better time than now to start.
