In the Word: Everything!

When I was a little kid, all the way back in the 80’s, I loved my superheroes.  Captain America, Superman, Batman and Robin, Spiderman, the Green Lantern, the Incredible Hulk, and yes even Wonder Woman.  I am sure there are so many more but its been a while.  I used to have sheets that I loved and waned to have on my bed all the time.  My friends joke about them 20 years later so I guess I was a bit obsessed.

I guess I love the idea of a superhero that comes to save people in some incredible way.  Maybe that explains why I love the story of our salvation as Christians.  The first reading from Isaiah says, “Be strong, fear not!  Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you.”  Now this was said some 700 years before Jesus was born by the prophet Isaiah.  The crazy part is how it came true in the person of Jesus Christ, the savior of the word.  He comes to save you!!!

There is a song by the band Vertical Horizon entitled Everything You Want that speaks to me often of how Jesus is everything we want and need but for reason we tend not to care.  As I look around at the malls and all of the preparations going on for Christmas, I think the world fits that description very well, since Christmas, a word that references Jesus in itself has become something forgetful of its real purpose.  Jesus Christ is the gift each of us needs, nothing else.  We might want other things, but they are simply the search in us for Him, the Savior, the source of life, joy, peace, true and deep love and meaning.  We don’t always know what we want, but Christ is what we need.  Don’t forget that this week.  Think. Pray. Decide. Change.

You are so loved by God who is everything we need and more than we could ever want.
