The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
Have you ever thought about why so many of us wear crucifixes? As Catholics, many of us wear them every day — on necklaces, bracelets, and sometimes even rings.
The other day, I was looking at the crucifix I always wear around my neck. It hangs from a gold chain, and I’ve had it since I was a teenager. My mother gave it to me, and ever since then I’ve rarely taken it off. Wearing it gives me a sense of peace and comfort. It’s hard to explain, but whenever something difficult or scary happens, or when I’m anxious about something coming up, I instinctively grab it for a moment. Somehow, it reminds me that everything is going to be okay.
That got me thinking: why do so many Christians choose to wear a crucifix? Why not another symbol connected to Jesus? We could wear something that represents the Resurrection, or one of His many miracles.
In Sunday’s Gospel, the apostle John reminds us that God sent His only Son to save us. Jesus did not come into the world to judge or condemn us. He came on a rescue mission — to bridge the gap between our broken humanity and our holy and loving Father. Through Him, we are invited to restore our relationship with our Creator.
Jesus came to remind us of God’s promise: that those who choose to trust in Him are no longer condemned, but are instead given the gift of new life and eternal communion with God.
God loves us so deeply that He sent His only Son to suffer and die for us. Jesus took on the sacrifice that we could never make on our own. Without Him, we would still remain trapped in sin and suffering. What an incredible act of love.
Wearing this crucifix every day reminds me that someone came into this world to save me. Because of Jesus, I have the hope of heaven. Because of Him, my life has changed for the better, because I know I have a Father in heaven who loves me more than I can imagine. All He asks is that I trust Him and have a relationship with Him.
That’s why whenever I feel afraid or worried, I reach for the crucifix around my neck. It reminds me that I have a Savior — and that this crucifix is a symbol of His sacrifice and His love for me.
