I AM

By Jonathan Camiolo –

My father was going through a hard time in his life.  There were health problems in the family, including mine.  His business was going through some changes and he had a lot to consider.  He was worried about taking care of his employees and our family of 6 children and my mom.  He just was feeling overwhelmed and like he was alone. My father is a prayerful man, so it is no surprise that he walked into a Church to pray, found a pew and knelt down.  As he prayed he told God about all the troubles and worries he was going through, asking for guidance and grace.  When he was getting ready to leave, he looked down and saw a prayer card that someone must have dropped or left behind.  He picked it up and read it.  Here is what it read:

MY NAME IS I AM

I was regretting the past,

And fearing the future.

Suddenly, my Lord was speaking:

My name is I Am.

He paused, I waited, He continued.

When you live in past,

With its mistakes and regrets,

It is hard; I am not there.

My name is not “I Was”.

When you live in the future,

With its problems and fears,

It is hard; I am not there.

My name is not “I Will Be”.

When you live in this moment,

It is not hard; I am here.

My name is I Am.

In the first reading from Exodus, this Sunday, we here the story of Moses and burning bush.  God gives Moses the command to save the Israelites, the Jews.  Moses said to God, “But when I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ if they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what am I to tell them?” God replied, “I am who am.”  Then he added, “This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you.”  God spoke further to Moses, “Thus shall you say to the Israelites: The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.  “This is my name forever; thus am I to be remembered through all generations.”

Today, there are a lot of people having hard times – some of them you might know or that person could be in your family; maybe it is you.  Millions and millions of people are out of work and can’t seem to get by.  People have been cheated and lied to.  We had the earthquake in Haiti, and now one in Chile. There is violence all around us as war rages around the world and even on the streets in our own country.  We see selfishness and rudeness in our schools and towns.  There is a lot of hurt and worry all around.

It is so important to remember that God is in this moment with us.  He is in the moment for all, if we can simply join Him there.  We live worried about the future – where am I going to go to school? How will I get a job?  Will I pass this test?  Make the team?  Will anyone ever be the “right one” for me? Will I ever feel connected?  Is my family going to stay together or make it through this rough time? And the many other worries and questions we have.  We live regretting the past – should I have done that instead?  What if I had…?  What if I had not…?  Remember, God is not in the moments of the past anymore, nor is He in the future.  Let’s live in the moment and depend on God, the I AM.
