Anyone out there struggle with anxiety from time to time? I know I do! Did you know anxiety is not just a product of our post-modern 2011 lives? Today St. Paul talks about it in his letter to the Philippians. What are some of the things we might be anxious about? Here’s a quick list: grades, friendships, boyfriend/girlfriend, difficult family situations, and so much more. At the root of these anxieties we struggle with a lack of control, with confronting the unknown. Will I pass this exam? What will happen to the family once Grandma’s cancer progresses? These are very valid questions that stir up worry and fear in our hearts. How can the Word of God help us in these moments?
Saint Paul encourages us to bring our prayers before God and also to think of things we are grateful for. The helps quell anxiety because it forces us to consider other moments when God has reached into our lives with his grace. When I get anxious about my finances, for example, I recall all the times in college I wasn’t quite sure how I would pay my tuition bill and somehow God provided extra, unexpected income for me. When I get anxious about big changes in my life, I recall other moments of change that were hard but also very peaceful because I was in God’s will. It doesn’t quite make sense when we become peaceful amidst worrisome situations and Saint Paul calls this the “peace that passes understanding.” We connect to the supernatural grace of God and look beyond our human limits of understanding.
Our thoughts can often be the source of our worries and anxiety. St Paul encourages us to instead fill our minds and conversations with “whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely and gracious.” This is a challenge for us today when we are surrounded by a lot of garbage! The many forms of media that we have are often the source of the exact opposite of what St Paul is encouraging us to think and talk about – we see graphic violence, inappropriate sexual images and scenes, bad language in songs and movies. It can be depressing! But, if you are willing to look for the good, you can surely find it! There are wholesome movies, inspiring song lyrics, talented dancers and artists out there! Paul’s words today should inspire us to seek out the good in our world today. Think of some positive role models in sports and movies? Why not talk about those people instead of the latest teen star who is in rehab again? Instead of watching questionable tv shows, watch some classic movies with your friends! These are just simple ways to fill your life with good things to talk and think about! The effects of this commitment to the good, pure and wholesome in your life will be the “peace of God” within you!
Today let’s reflect on our worries, and consider turning them into prayers before God. Let’s not hold onto our anxiety as if the solutions depend on us, and instead surrender our needs and desires to our almighty and powerful God. Commit to finding the good in people, media, and have wholesome, up building conversations, and enjoy the peace that follows these decisions!
