“Wakanda FOREVER!”

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

A few months ago, my husband saw the Marvel movie “Black Panther” and has since been obsessed with it. He keeps trying to teach our 1 year old to cross his arms and say “Wakanda FOREVER!”.  He even claims that his wedding ring is made of vibranium.

In case you aren’t a comic book fan or up on your superhero trivia, vibranium is the indestructible metal found in abundance in Black Panther’s country of Wakanda.  It has countless intriguing properties that allow Wakanda to be the most scientifically advanced country in the world.  It’s also what Captain America’s iconic shield is made from, and as far as the rest of the world knows, it is quite rare.

By the way, there are NO SPOILERS here if you still haven’t seen it. But one of the biggest questions asked in the movie is whether Wakanda should share what it has with the rest of the world.  Should they share their secret weapon – the source of their power?

In the Gospel today, we see a scene that should remind us of something out of a Marvel movie. Jesus, the leader of the heroes who had been killed but came back from the dead, summons his 11 Apostles to a mountain so that they can have a super-top-secret meeting. He explains to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  And now I’m going to share it with you.”

Thomas gasps. “Wow Jesus! Is this mountain made out of…vibranium?  Do each of us get a cool shield with a cross on it?  Or maybe mine could have a Jesus fish on it?”

“No Thomas, even better. This power comes from my relationship with the Father and the Holy Spirit; The Holy Trinity.” Jesus goes on to explain to them that they are to receive this power through the Holy Spirit.

“So my shield will have a dove on it?”

“No Thomas, hold off on the shield idea for now.”

Jesus continues, “And the best part is, this power is unlimited!  You can share it with everyone!  Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” He gives them a mission to share the secret weapon –Baptism through the Holy Trinity – to change the world.

So the Apostles, like the Avengers, receive their power and mission to save the world from evil. Not long after, Jesus explains that he will ascend into Heaven. I can imagine that the Apostles’ reaction might have been: “Nooooooo!!!!! Don’t leave us! We can’t do this without you!” Jesus responds with one of the most epic lines of the Gospel. He says to his apostles (and to us), “Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Are you aware that you received power when you were Baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Are you aware that Jesus is with you always, ready to equip you with tools (spiritual superhero accessories, if you will) and has a special mission for you? Will you share your vibranium with the rest of the world?!
