Holy Family

I don’t think there are many of us who would pick up our belongings, pack our bags, and move our family to another country based on a dream we might have had. It almost seems crazy; but this was the faith of St. Joseph!  Anytime I read about St. Joseph, I am so shocked yet inspired to see how he so willingly trusted God and followed him wherever he was being called. Joseph and Mary needed to get to Egypt to bring their child to safety. The Holy Family, fleeing out of the danger of King Herod, is experiencing a sense of desperation as their life and their child’s life depends on reaching Egypt.

2019 may have been a difficult year for some of you. You may be one among the many counting down for the start of the New Year (and decade). Some of you may be hoping and praying for a new start, new direction, or even for some hope in a situation filled with despair. Often times when we are going through a difficult time in life or a “low”, we find ourselves asking where is God in this moment? For Joseph, it maybe would have been easier to question God and ask why He would allow for this to happen to his family. Rather, just as he trusted the angel who appeared to him in a dream and told him to not leave Mary and the child in her womb, Jesus, he trusted the messenger of God and fled to Egypt.

Just as Joseph, Mary, and the child Jesus, we might be fleeing to safety from something in our own lives. We are desperately searching for that new beginning or new hope as if our life depended on it. You are not alone. If we trust where God is calling us, He will provide everything else that we need. Matthew Chapter 6 we read, “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?”

We should live and walk with the confidence that we are taken care of by our Heavenly Father. Whatever situation we are trying to “flee to safety” from, God is with us, carrying us and walking with us. We just need to listen for His voice and listen to where He is trying to lead us.
