Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

When I was growing up, my parents always took me to Mass every Sunday. But there came a point when I had to choose if I wanted to continue in my faith. Even though my parents encouraged me to continue in it, I ended up taking a step back. Looking back now, I ended up rejecting my faith because I didn’t fully understand it at that time. Later, things got really hard in my life I didn’t know where to turn to because everywhere I turned led me into a dead end. It wasn’t until I remembered something that my mom used to tell me that really helped me through this difficult time in my life. My mom always told me that no matter how far we stray from God and our faith, we can always turn back to Him. I ended up running back to Jesus to find that His arms were always there to receive me. From that moment on, my life was never the same

In this Sunday’s Gospel we see Jesus telling us a parable about a landowner who owned a beautiful vineyard. It had a tower and a winepress, and he leased it to his tenants. Not a bad deal for them, as long as they stuck to their agreement, which involved turning over the landowner’s produce when the time came.

When the landowner wanted to collect his produce, he sent his servants. To his surprise, all of the servants were killed by the tenants. After a few attempts he finally decided to send his son whom he hoped they would respect, but he too was killed by the tenants. Jesus then asks his listeners, “Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to the tenants?” and the people responded with a unanimous verdict that the tenants would face the consequences.

Jesus agreed with them and then quoted the Scripture that many of us know, “the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” We all know that this saying is alluding to the story of Jesus when he was rejected by man only to become our Lord and Savior in the end. Jesus fully knew He was going to be rejected but He also knew that this was God’s will and He fully embraced that and ended up becoming the cornerstone for our faith. Without Jesus sacrificing His life for us we could have never built our faith on one single truth, “for God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

Just like in my own life, I rejected Jesus but in the end,  he became my cornerstone. He became the center of my life and everything revolved around my faith. All my choices, decisions, and my perspective of life all changed because of Him and my faith. I would have never become the woman of faith I am today if I did not make the Lord the cornerstone of my life!

Today let us pray that we can fully embrace this truth and live out our faith knowing that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and He will forever be our cornerstone. In this world that seems very unstable and uncertain at times we all need stability. So, let Jesus be that constant stability in our lives; let us cling to Him, for He is our solid foundation, our cornerstone. And when we build our faith on solid foundation nothing can break it. So let us stand strong this week as we continue to pray for one another and the world!
