9th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Yarr, I be a pirate.  Sailing the seven seas with me parrot on me shoulder.  Shiver me timbers.  I bet yer wonderin’ where me treasure be buried.  Ye be warned; I’ll tell ye, but once ye set sail on this journey, there’s no turnin’ back.

It all started when I was a lad.  Me pappy and his pappy before him used to bury their treasure in the back yard.  When we put in the pool, they dug up seven chests full o’ gold medallions.  Me pappy had to find a new spot for his loot, so he opened up a new savings account at Union Jack Credit Union.  I knew that when it came time to bury me treasure one day, I had to find the perfect spot.

See, treasure is all we pirates think about.  And I think there be a bit of pirate in all of us.  Once there’s somethin’ ye treasure, it takes all yer attention.  All yer focus.  All yer heart.  Jesus says exactly that in the Gospel this week; “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.”

I searched the whole world for the perfect place, but ne’er did I find the right island to draw a map of, with an “x marks the spot.”  Then it dawned on me, sure as the sun comin’ up over the horizon, that it’s not “x” marks the spot, but “+” marks the spot.  It be the Cross, and Jesus upon it.

I started to store my treasure in heaven.  Sometimes it seems so far away, while other times I can picture me self countin’ out those final paces to dig it up.  Now heaven be all I think about, and I try to be the best pirate I can be.  Ye can keep yer gold, yer jewels, yer ships and sails.  But as it says in Hebrews, I have me hope in Jesus as a “sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.”

So where be your treasure?  Be it in the bank?  In success?  In what others think?  In a relationship?  In the mirror?  Or be it in heaven with Jesus?  If it be in heaven, do ye live like it?  Have ye plot a course for it?  Be ye followin’ yer compass bearings toward it?  If not, ask yerself why not, and you might find there be somethin’ else ye treasure more than God.  But matey, throw it overboard right now; there be only one treasure worth yer heart, and that’s God himself.  So let his word be yer map, let the Cross be yer mark, and keep your gaze fixed upon Jesus.

Now if ye’d excuse me, my pirate tummy is getting’ the rumblies.  Time for another bowl of Cap’n Crunch. Yarrrr.
