“Soil,” By Miranda Murray, Fiat Ventures

15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Read this excerpt from this Sunday’s Gospel from Matthew.

“A Sower went out to sow.
And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path,
and birds came and ate it up.
Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil.
It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep,
and when the sun rose it was scorched,
and it withered for lack of roots.
Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.
But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit,
a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.
Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

Jesus tells us in this parable the seeds sown are the “words of the kingdom.” You have heard the words of the Kingdom, you have heard that Jesus is Lord, that God sent His only Son to die for our sins on the cross that He might conquer death and we would be given eternal life with Him forever in Heaven. So, having heard these words of the kingdom, how do you respond? Do you understand it? Or does the message fall on you like the seeds on the path, not understood and snatched away by the evil one? Is it rooted deeply in your life? Or does the message fall on you like seeds sown on rocky ground, falling away as soon as there is any trial or tribulation? Can you even hear it? Or is the message choked out by the worldly things that make so much noise and take up so much space in your life?

You have received the good news of Jesus Christ, if you receive it in a heart that is open, if you receive it deeply and let it impact every aspect of your life, if you receive it – you will bear fruit, and it will yield a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.

This week, open your eyes and your heart to the depth of the message of Jesus Christ, receive the good news in a new way the recenters your life.
